Sailing Instructions

  1. RULES

    1. Racing will take place under the Racing Rules of Sailing 1997-2000 (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA, these sailing instructions and the appropriate class rules, except as any of these are changed by these sailing instructions. The Series will be designated Category A.

  1. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
    1. Eligibility:

    2. The safety of a yacht and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner/competitor racing the yacht who must ensure that the yacht and crew are adequate to face the conditions that may arise in the course of the race. Neither the establishment of these sailing instructions nor the inspection of the yacht under these conditions in any way limits or reduces the absolute responsibility of the owner/competitor, his skipper or crew, as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover, every owner/competitor warrants the suitability of his yacht for the race or races.

    3. Measurement

Yachts may be measured before or after any race at the discretion of the race committee.

  1. NOTICE TO COMPETITORS
  2. Notice to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at Ferry Nab Jetties.

  3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
  4. Any changes to the sailing instructions will be posted on the official notice board the day it will take effect, or signalled from the OD boat, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted on the official notice board at least a week before it will take effect.

  5. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
  6. No signals will be made ashore.

  7. SCHEDULE OF RACES
  8. The schedule of races appears as Appendix 1.

  11. RACING AREA
  12. The racing area will be Lake Windermere (North and South Lake).

  13. THE COURSE
    1. Alternative Course
    2. The course will always be an alternative course, and the marks of the course, and an indication of the direction the mark should be rounded, will be indicated on the OD boat by displaying numbered boards corresponding to the turning marks on the map attached, Appendix 2.

      Green will indicate a starboard turning mark.

      Red will indicate a port turning mark.

    3. Number of rounds

    The number of rounds to be sailed will be displayed on a board on the OD boat before the warning signal.

  14. MARKS
  15. The marks of the course will generally be green buoys or barrels, with the exception of number 8 in the South Lake and number 7 in north lake. They will generally be marked with the name of the mark and the number of the mark, save the two exceptions which are unmarked (or marked FBA).

  16. STARTS
    1. Starting System
    2. Races will be started using rule 26, System 1. However, the Fast Fleet Class will start 15 minutes after the Slow Fleet start. The warning signal for the Fast Fleet Class, IC Flag "D", will be displayed 5 minutes after the starting signal for the Slow Fleet start. Appendix 3 details the Race Signals to be used when starting.

    3. Fixed Starting Line
    4. The starting line will be between an orange flag on the OD boat and a mark on either the starboard or port end of the line.

    5. Gate Start

    There will be a gate start in accordance with the procedure in Appendix 3.

  17. CHANGE OF COURSE AFTER THE START
    1. When after the race has started there is a substantial windshift or it is noticed a mark is missing or misplaced then the OD may move one or more marks. When the course made good is significantly changed by such alteration, the OD boat will be stationed near the start of the first leg affected and will fly I.C. flag "C" over a green or red flag indicating that the direction of that leg lies either to starboard or port respectively of its previous bearing. She will draw attention to this change by making numerous sound signals.
    2. If after the start the lead boats reaches the vicinity of a mark and finds it is missing or dangerous to round, she may choose an appropriate alternative mark close to but at a position such that it would extend the course distance, and would not significantly disadvantage other competitors. When doing so she will round the mark and indicate as soon as possible to other competitors that an alternative mark has been rounded and the reason for the change.

  18. THE FINISH
    1. The finishing line will be between an orange flag on the OD boat and a nearby mark at the port or starboard end.
    2. If the course has been shortend then I.C. flag "S" will be displayed on the OD boat.

  19. PENALTY SYSTEM
  20. The 720 degree turns penalty rule 44.1 will apply.

  21. TIME LIMIT
  22. Boats failing to finish within 15 Minutes plus 150% of the elapse time of the first boat to finish will be scored Did Not Finish.

  23. PROTESTS
  24. Rule 60 in the RRS will apply.

    Protests shall be written on forms available from the Sailing Secretary and returned within 7 days of the race.

  25. SCORING
  26. The Low Points scoring system rule A2 will apply. The number of races to constitute a named series are indicated in Appendix 1.

  27. TROPHIES

The trophies to be awarded for each race or series are indicated in Appendix 4.
